A deadly auto accident involving three vehicles on Interstate 75 near Manatee County line happened early Tuesday. The southbound lanes were closed until 5 p.m.
The crash was caused when Brittany G. Gonzalez, 18, dropped her phone and reached down to pick it up. She drove on to the shoulder and then over corrected to the right and then left. Her 2002 Ford Expedition overturned several times before it came to rest in the middle of the southbound lane. Troopers say, Ms. Gonzalez got out and went to the shoulder to call 911. A Chevy Suburban driven by James Sims, 66 years old, from Georgia did not see Gonzalez’s SUV and hit the right side of the SUV. Sims was killed in the crash.

Angel Pedraja, 37, of Miami was driving a semi-trailer traveling south in the right lane. Pedraja saw what he thought was a person waiving a flashlight and switched from the right lane to the middle lane. He saw debri from the previous crash and started to brake. He was unable to avoid the vehicle and his right front struck the left side of the suburban. The semi-trailer then rotated and turned over onto the side blocking the center and outside lanes. Fluids leaked from all three vehicles, damaging the middle and outside lanes. The southbound lanes were diverted into the left lane while crews cleaned up the roadway.
