The accident happened at the intersection of Kensington Avenue and East Gulf to Lake Highway in Inverness. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Bonnie Mitchell, 67, stopped at Kensington Avenue and was making a left turn onto Gulf to Lake Highway. She turned into the path of an oncoming 2009 Ford F450 causing the accident.

The driver of the truck tried to avoid hitting the Kia Optima driven by Mitchell. He tried braking and swerving but the truck hit the left side of the Kia. The Kia then spun and came to rest on the inside lane of Gulf to Lake Highway. Mitchell was taken to Citrus Memorial Hospital where she died from her injuries.
