Christina Shiver was driving a Ford Escape SUV on 40th Avenue Northeast when she became distracted and took her eyes off the road for a moment. Police said the SUV veered right and jumped the north curb and went up on the sidewalk. Then the vehicle went up onto a concrete barriers separating the roadway and the sidewalk along the bridge that connects to Shore Acres neighborhood. The left side of the vehicle became elevated the metal guardrails that lined the north wall of the bridge ripped through the passenger’s side windshield, killing Alexia Douglas upon impact. This is an example of a terrible accident caused when a driver is distracted even for a moment while driving.

The driver was treated at All children’s Hospital and released. The investigation is ongoing.
